Article

by Susan Willis

Since its inception, the Internet has been described as a kind of mega-library, giving researchers access to more information at their fingertips than any other thing in human history. Of course, this statement is true. Just one problem: the methods, techniques and tools used collectively to seek information that has not touched the vast overwhelming amount of information available to us. In other words, often we know that we are looking somewhere, but we do not always know how to get there. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack. The world of online access to public records is no exception. It is true that if you are looking for free public records searches on the Internet, the information you need is available off somewhere. ? But how do you know what are the best websites Then, by type of information sought, are some of the best sites I’ve found when you want to search public records free online: 1. Personal Searches: people and contact information Looking for that classmate, a neighbor passed, an old flame or a former business associate? We need a people finder, and there are plenty to choose from. Try these free sites: ZabaSearch.com and Yahoo people search (people.yahoo.com) 2 .. Vital records: births, deaths, marriage, divorce info “Life” comes from the Latin word meaning “life”, so of course vital records are the records relating to the major events of our lives, such as births, marriages and deaths. Visit VitalRec.com to obtain records such as birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, naturalization, adoption and land records. 3. Licensed Professional Need to find a good doctor or lawyer in your area or who are working in a particular area of practice? For lawyers, check out the online directory FindLaw.com. (Attention: Please note that while the service is free, the lawyers pay for the position on your site, so do not expect the most senior lawyers need to be the best option). To find a doctor in your area or work in a particular specialty, see AMA Doctor Finder (ama-assn.org/aps/amahg.htm). 4. Criminal Records Looking to know that someone you know is making it difficult or behind bars in a minimum security prison? Check out the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator (bop.gov/iloc2/LocateInmate.jsp). Search by name, age, race and sex, and find out the name of the prison or release date. 5. Background Check If you are considering hiring a new employee, but must run a background check, I recommend ZabaSearch.com. Note that while regular “looking people” in this site are free, background checks are within its quality service and deal with a fee. 6. Military personnel records National Personnel Records Center (archives.gov) is one of the National Archives and Records Administration’s larger sites. Claiming to be “a central repository of documents related to personnel, both military and civil service. Article by Jean Ruskin

Where can I find a free “Reverse Cell Phone Finder”? Is there such a lookup directory? For free, that is.

Almost everybody at one time or another has wanted to locate someone with a unlisted number for a variety of reasons.

In the olden days when land lines grid locked the communication world, when a person/business requested a private number that information was NOT put into the directory database designed for search. So you could not get access through telephone company phone book or the friendly operator who often replied “I’m sorry this number is not listed.” or “Upon the customers request, this phone number is no longer listed.” Ahh.

If you had a listed phone number, but didn’t know who it was associated with, you could use a “reverse lookup” directory to find who the number belonged to. Of-course there were also services that one would pay for to get additional information for both business and residential listings.

In this age of ever increasing usage of cell phones, mobile phones are even HARDER to trace because there is no standard phone book listing like that of Verizon or Superpages, off or online. Often cell phone directory listings are formed from users need to be listed for business or social purposes.

So is there such a thing as free “Reverse Cell Phone Lookup”? Not really. Sure some websites with suggest that they can offer reverse search features for cell phones for free, but often you will be receiving nothing more than a modified search engine results. This you can do yourself.

So where do you go next?

For Free

1) Try searching the top search engines. Do a goggle search entering the phone number in quotes (“XXX-XXX-XXXX”) or with a querying function ["phonebook:XXX-XXX-XXXX"]. Also do a key word search with that person’s name/knick-name and any relevant information you think of. Common examples that can be good searches include age, last known residence, schools attended, and so on.

2) It is also worthwhile to look for the person in a social networking website such as Facebook.com, Friendster.com or Classmates.com. Be sure to search the website that best fits the person’s profile and demographics. There is a real neat search feature in Finding-People.com that lets you do a batch search of all main social networking sites.

For Pay

There are plenty of online companies and services that you can run as many reverse cell number searches as you like, for a nominal rate, once you sign up. Often these websites also offer a single lookup for a very attractive low fee. The records you receive vary by program offerings and may provide data on cell phone numbers, land lines, fax, pagers, address and carrier service information.

Beyond reverse lookups there are also websites like Zabasearch, which offer access to even more information such as background checks financial records such as bankruptcies, liens, people finder data and public records like births, deaths, marriages, divorces and adoptions, police files, sex offender records. Oh MY! It is quite interesting but somewhat alarming to know that companies like Zabasearch has the capacity to track virtually all U.S. citizen with an address, phone number and birth date… Check it out, are you there? Do you want to be there. This is the first directory site I have noticed that will ask you to pay to be taken OFF their website.

All these sites operate in the same way, offering access to tailored programs for a set fee. Be sure to do your research before you hire a search site. Your privacy may be one issue to consider. I have included one company for you to check out. They offer one free search as a trial offer.

At the end of the day, it boils down to value. You get what you pay for. And sometimes, your time is better spent doing other things other than surfing the net. Always a personal choice, of course.
